Top 10 Volcanoes in Indonesia

There are over 26 volcanoes in Sumatra. Gunung Api is Indonesian for Volcano. Literally meaning 'fire mountain'. Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes.

Many of the volcanoes in Sumatra can be climbed although some are alot more difficult than others. Most of the volcanoes are around 2000m tall so cloud can form rapidly and visibility can be reduced to 2 meters if the weather changes quickly. If this occurs, don't panic. Just sit down and wait for the visibility to improve before trekking back down the mountain. It gets very cold at the top of these volcanoes so take a jumper and long pants.

The easiest volcanoes to get to are Sibayak and Sinabung both close to Berastagi in North Sumatra. You are able to climb both, Sibayak being the easiest, a 2 - 3 hour climb to the summit.
